STUDY INFORMATION FOR RESEARCH
Indiana University IRB#: 20395
Dear Participant,
You are invited to participate in research that is being carried out at Indiana University (IU) Bloomington. We are conducting a study which aims to better understand how young adults hear nonnative speech sounds in a second language. This research is completely online. You can participate from anywhere as long as you are in a quiet space where you won't be distracted for 55-75 minutes.
ABOUT THIS RESEARCH
This webpage gives information about the study to help you decide whether you want to participate. Please read this webpage, and ask any questions you have, before agreeing to be in the study.
This study is being conducted by Isabelle Darcy and Brian Rocca. All personnel are a part of IU’s Second Language Studies Department. This study is funded by the Harry Gradman research award (from Dpt. of Second Language Studies at IU) as well as the Language Learning Dissertation Grant.
WHY IS THIS STUDY BEING DONE?
The purpose of this study is to better understand how people hear speech sounds that do not exist in their native language. This is why we are looking for participants who speak English as their native language, and participants who speak Korean as their first language.
TAKING PART IN THIS STUDY IS VOLUNTARY
You may choose not to take part in the study, or you may leave the study at any time. Deciding not to participate, or deciding to leave the study later, will not result in any penalty or loss of benefits to which you are entitled and will not affect your relationship with Indiana University or any of its staff, students, or faculty.
WILL I BE PAID FOR PARTICIPATION?
Yes, you will be paid $20 US dollars (Amazon gift card) for participating.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL TAKE PART?
If you agree to participate, you will be one of 80 participants taking part in this study. We are looking for 20 native speakers of American English and 60 native speakers of Korean.

Note: We will not record the Zoom meeting. Additionally, your image and voice will not be recorded in any way.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF TAKING PART IN THE STUDY?
The risks include some fatigue due to the required concentration during the listening tasks. There are, however, opportunities for breaks built into each listening task to lessen the fatigue. In addition, there is risk of loss of confidentiality or data privacy, which we aim to minimize by keeping all subjects’ identifiable data on a protected drive only accessible to the key personnel of this study. Furthermore, all collected data will be kept de-identified and only de-identified data will be analyzed.
WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF TAKING PART IN THE STUDY?
There are several direct benefits for you in taking part in this study:
HOW WILL MY INFORMATION BE PROTECTED?
